Streamers, we forgot to post this a couple weeks ago and figured… why not. Netflix released in December Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire. I know what you’re thinking, “What is this movie all about?” Well, when a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, a mysterious stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival. Alien and battle hijinks ensue.
As we forgot to post this the movie is just the same – slightly forgettable. The movie is a little dry and a slow burn, but the forgettable part is that it’s ultimately Guardians of the Galaxy or Suicide Squad on a different planet without the comedic relief. I know what you’re thinking, the comedic relief is the most important part of those other movies. Yes, imagine watching Suicide Squad (either version) without any comedic relief but not a serious action movie. It’s a bit rough to think about. Now, on top of that, the storyline isn’t that original. It’s not a great combo plus you already know you have to wait until Part 2 for the resolution. That’s actually the most annoying part of the movie that you know this isn’t the end no matter how it turns out.
Nevertheless, the movie succeeds in two aspects pretty well – the look of the movie and characters and the violence. Neither of these are the best you’ve ever seen, but they make the movie worth watching. The action sequences, which should’ve been sooner and more often, are hard-hitting and vicious, even when the characters don’t sell it that well. On top of that, you’ve got some nice space landscapes that just make scenes interesting.

Thus, Rebel Moon: Part One is a solid streaming movie and might even be worth seeing in the theater due to the size and look of the scenery. In this movie, you aren’t coming for the storyline or the acting and if that’s the case you’ll be entertained. The few and far between action sequences are hard hitting and cruel. Grab a bowl of popcorn and check out Rebel Moon: Part One while we wait for Part 2 to come out soon.
