Welcome back, Streamers. This weekend we were finally able to catch up on a Netflix release from a couple weeks ago, Unfrosted. This movie picks up in 1963 Michigan, where renown business rivals, Kellogg’s and Post, compete to create a fruit filled item that would change breakfast forever. Cereal comedian hijinks ensue.

The biggest plus for this movie is the huge ensemble cast. This cast hits the who’s who in comedy for almost every character with a line. You start with Jerry Seinfeld and Melissa McCarthy, and you go all the way to Earthquake and Darrell Hammond. It is the most random assortment of comedians and comedic actors you can find. Jerry really went deep in his Rolodex for this one; however, the depth of cast didn’t fully translate to comedic hilarity. While I think everyone will find this movie funny, but the depth of the star-studded cast will make people think this is supposed to be the funniest thing in history – I’m saying that “pee your pants” type of funny but in reality, Unfrosted produces a more clever and less laugh-out-loud type of comedy. This isn’t the type of movie you can just have on in the background and you’ll crack up from what you’re hearing. There’s a certain mastery to this comedy where you need to be fully engaged in the film to really enjoy this movie and still you won’t laugh out loud. That’s actually the most frustrating part of this movie. Viewers will know what they are experiencing is funny, but the laughs still won’t come. I’m not sure if this is an editing, writing or directorial issue. I can’t put my finger on it but where there’s smoke there’s probably a tiny stove overcooking a sea monkey filled ravioli at high temperatures with a bad chef. This joke is exemplary of what occurred in Unfrosted. It’s definitely creatively funny but also… am I supposed to laugh at this?

At the end of the day, Trip and I agree that this is a funny movie but not a knee slapper. Unfrosted has a star-studded cast with an original story but just lacks comedy or editing that makes you bust out laughing. Whether a handful of popcorn or a bowl for Trip, Unfrosted is a clever and funny movie that is something to be seen if there is nothing else you must watch.
