Hellur, Streamers! It’s that time of year again. Yes, the time of year when Tyler Perry puts out another rushed film that has potential but lacks focus. In this month’s new release on Prime Video, Tyler Perry’s Duplicity, Marley (Kat Graham), a high-powered attorney, takes on the civil suit against the city following the shooting of her friend’s, Fela (Meagan Tandy), husband. As the city percolates with social unrest due to the shooting of an unarmed black man, Marley begins to unravel the truth behind the actions of the police raising questions about her relationships. Tyler Perry hijinks ensue.

When you have a Tyler Perry joint, you know what you’re going to get. Like his other films, Tyler Perry’s Duplicity is thrown together with little research or care given to the development of the plot, the characters or much else of the production. There is a germ of a good idea in this story in its focus on the aftermath of a police shooting. However, Mr. Perry is more interested in melodrama and cliched twists than thoughtfully considering the complexities of the situation. Unfortunately, this movie isn’t that entertaining – for instance, no one is dragging a corpse out of a cast in the middle of a funeral. In fact, this movie only really goes off the rails near the end, and it makes no sense. It’s just frustrating and kind of boring.

I think Kat Graham tries to give a good performance, but the dialogue is so bad it really weighs her down. The rest of the cast is unremarkable. I can’t really spend too much time analyzing this movie when Tyler Perry barely spent any time putting it together. He probably wrote it in a hour and filmed it in a day. Let me just move on.

Ultimately, Tyler Perry’s Duplicity is more of the same from Tyler Perry Studios. It’s a thrown together mess full of plot holes and not enough excitement to sustain its runtime. There are a few twists and turns that try to keep the movie afloat, but they don’t make sense… so who cares? For the fans of Tyler Perry, you may be fine with a bowl of popcorn, but Duplicity is more forgettable than anything else. For everyone else, it’s only a handful of popcorn on a bored late night.
