Hey, Streamers! We’re at that point in the summer movie season where things start to slow down. That means you might want to check out something a little off the beaten path like Together, an indie horror flick, which debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. In Together, Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco), an unmarried couple in a long-term relationship, move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s new teaching job. Millie is excited of the prospect of a big change in their relationship while Tim is hesitant, pining for his past life. Once in their new home, as their relationship issues bubble under the surface, strange things begin to draw them together. Sticky hijinks ensue.

Together is the feature length debut for writer and director Michael Shanks. This movie has a clever premise and is well-constructed as a tense horror, thriller. Now, the relationship drama and the horror movie plot machinations are a little on-the-nose. Some may find that charming and novel while others will definitely see it as too obvious a metaphor. Also, your mileage may vary as some lines of dialogue hammer the point home of togetherness, commitment, and co-dependency. The overarching theme is pretty evident by the title, the plot devices, and even the casting of a real-life married couple. It’s a little cutesy despite the horror lurking in the background. Nevertheless, it is easy to buy into as there is a lot of originality brought into the execution of the movie overall.

Here’s the real thing. This movie is very entertaining. Dave Franco and Alison Brie have such good chemistry together. They are able to bring good dramatic tension to their scenes while also being funny and sweet together. There are scary moments throughout this movie but especially in the beginning. There’s one very jarring jump scare that I’m glad my hands were already over my eyes. Furthermore, you will definitely squirm in your seat as gruesome visual effects take over, and you’ll chuckle at a hilarious needle-drop.

Ultimately, Together is a clever and creepy movie that depicts co-dependency in relationships as body horror. Dave Franco and Alison Brie are great together on screen and bring the drama, horror and even some comedy to this movie. Grab a big box of popcorn, your better half and enjoy this original horror flick together.
