What’s up, Streamers! We’re in the full swing of holiday season, so you might be looking for some light, family fare at the movie theater. Eternity may not be exactly what you’re looking for in terms of a holiday movie, but it is a romantic dramedy that attempts to get its audience to appreciate life, love and family. In Eternity, Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen play Larry and Joan Cutler, a couple who have been married for more than 50 years; and when each die, they go to the afterlife waiting area where they have to choose a place to exist in for eternity. The conflict comes in the form of Joan’s first husband, Luke (Callum Tuner), who has been waiting for her since his death 60-something years prior. Now, Joan has to choose not only the eternity she wants to exist in forever but also which husband she wants to be with her. Defending Your Life and love triangle hijinks ensue.

Eternity is a charming and funny movie with an interesting concept despite the potentially morbid subject matter. I’m reminded of the great Albert Brooks-Meryl Streep movie Defending Your Life that uses a similar afterlife waiting area to build a life-affirming narrative. This movie doesn’t reach the transcendent heights of that movie, but it does a good job with its premise and characters. Eternity builds a whimsical afterlife with “Afterlife Coordinators” and a myriad of eternities for people to choose. The colors and the style are dazzling. There are a number of sight gags and cute touches to keep you interested, even in the background of the movie. While the love triangle plot is pretty basic, it is brought to life by sweet performances by the main stars, Teller, Olsen and Turner. Additionally, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early have funny moments as the assigned Afterlife Coordinators for Larry and Joan. The elements of Eternity come together to make an emotionally resonant movie that avoids being downbeat but ultimately is quite buoyant and hopeful.

Ultimately, Eternity is a sweet and funny movie that has poignant moments to tug on your heartstrings. The entire cast came to play, and they are funny and charming throughout. You’ll have a smile on your face and tear in your eye. Take your loved ones and a bowl of popcorn to the theater for a matinee.
