Hey, Streamers! Love is truly in the air. We really need a movie that can lighten the mood and lift our hearts. Lucky for us, a new romantic comedy, You, Me & Tuscany, which stars Halle Bailey and Rege-Jean Page opens this weekend and promises to deliver romance and Italian food. In this movie, Anna (Bailey), a young aspiring chef, who is an out of work housesitter, jets off to Tuscany after a chance meeting with an Italian businessman, Matteo. When Anna is discovered in Matteo’s empty villa, she concocts a story and relationship in order to appease his family. As these things go, Anna develops unexpected chemistry with Matteo’s brother, Michael (Page), which could derail her entire adventure. Pasta, wine and under Tuscan sun hijinks ensue.
Unlike The Drama, which opened in theaters last week, You, Me, & Tuscany is a straight down the middle romantic comedy. There are no unexpected twists or reveals in this movie. It is a classic romantic comedy, and it borrows plot points and devices from other movies in this genre. You know exactly what’s going to happen from the very beginning, which could either be boring or comforting. What makes this movie work is that there are many elements that are genuinely fun and endearing. The setting is beautiful and sets the stage for romance to flourish. The lead actors are beautiful and charming people. Even though I don’t think she is the strongest actress, Bailey is sweet and believable in this role. You will root for her to find what she’s looking for in life and love. Page still has it as a leading man just like the Duke from Bridgerton. Being attractive is 90% of the battle. Beyond the leads, this movie is lifted immensely by the supporting cast. They have all of the best lines. Romantic comedies, in my opinion, are rarely funny, but this one leans on those supporting characters to deliver big laughs. While there are definitely some corny moments and a few scenes are over-the-top, I couldn’t help but smile and get swept away by the charm and romance of this movie.

Ultimately, You, Me & Tuscany succeeds in making a formulaic romantic comedy feel like a breath of fresh air. Halle Bailey and Rege-Jean Page have palpable chemistry and are just likeable, attractive people. Even though you know how it’s all going to end, the movie makes you enjoy the ride. The cast of characters is fun despite some over-the-top and corny moments. The scenery is lush and romantic. It all just works. I can see this movie being mentioned alongside others in the rom-com canon. Grab a big box of popcorn, your main squeeze, and fly off to the theater.
