Welcome back, Streamers! This weekend we were able to catch up with a damsel in distress on Netflix, Damsel. In this movie, a dutiful damsel, Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), agrees to marry a handsome prince, Henry (Nick Robinson), only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Medieval hijinks ensue. Let’s see how this turns out.

How many storylines where we have a strong woman lead do we need? This is the same story we’ve already had told without originality except with a young woman. In fact, this is one of the most unoriginal things you can think of especially if you’ve seen the trailer. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the movie. It’s almost as if you shouldn’t waste the time. Then, you have a medieval dragon that has a medieval petty streak. The predictability of the movie is only saved by the dragon burning heads up, and we don’t get enough of it. One thing that must not be overlooked is the nice costume design in the movie.

Millie does her best to kick butt without superpowers. She still looks young, but she’s grown a ton in her acting prowess. Is this a movie to truly show off acting ability? Not really, but she could botch a role like this with annoying acting. Now, a lot of the movie she is just grunting or not talking but she feels less annoying than some of her previous movies. Now, let’s talk about the limited cast. That’s about all you can say. Angela Bassett is in it and it’s quite weird. She’s better than this except on 911.

Ultimately, I can’t tell if Damsel is in the distress or the viewers of the movie are. Damsel is all about medieval women kicking butt in the most unoriginal and predictable way possible. Grab a handful of popcorn if you’re a bored and can’t find anything else to watch to fill your desire for a strong female lead.

On a side note, watch out for dragons!
