Welcome back, Streamers. These streaming services are pumping out new content like no one’s business. And with that, they are releasing sequels to movies that no one knew was coming or wanted like My Spy: The Eternal City. If you remember from the the first installment, My Spy, we follow J (Dave Bautista), a veteran CIA agent, who takes care of his protégé, Sophie (Chloe Coleman), while her mother is away. J has stepped out of his comfort zone into the dad zone. He must try to do both in order to prevent a catastrophic nuclear scheme aimed at the Vatican, which disrupts Sophie’s high school choir trip to Italy. My Spy hijinks remotely ensue.

I enjoyed My Spy and was pleasantly surprised by the pairing of Dave Bautista and a young Chloe Coleman. So, I figured I’d give this one a shot, but I was left underwhelmed. This is not Dave Bautista’s best work, and I’m a fan of his. He’s not funny or powerful in this. If you aren’t going to utilize his strengths as an actor, why was he even in this movie? On the other hand, Chloe Coleman is a BA now, which really worked; but her cute, annoying charm was lost. The whole teenage thing was fine but didn’t lend itself to being as comedic as the first. This movie leaned a bit too much into the family drama than the odd couple dynamic. The first movie captured a weird and cute partnership that worked. This installment while giving us exactly what they were going for, in the strife between the teenager and semi-parent, lacked the original’s odd couple comedic magic. The rest of the cast did exactly what they did before, which was average at best. Even the setting of the movie in Italy was not used as well as it could’ve been. The place is set for romance, history and other dope settings but we only got a couple streets and hotel rooms.

Honestly, there isn’t much to say about My Spy: The Eternal City. The movie is a typical action-comedy movie and provides none of the magic that came from the first installment which wasn’t over-the-top good itself. Grab a handful of popcorn and watch this if you enjoyed the first movie, but don’t expect to be blown away.
