Welcome back, Streamers! This weekend we finally caught up with The Pickup which was one of the deluge of streaming movies that came out last week. This movie follows Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson as their armored truck’s routine cash pickup turns into a heist and deadly pursuit. Buddy comedy and un-reluctant robber hijinks ensue.

Let’s keep this one really simple. The Pickup is just an average movie. The comedy is average, the heisting is average to poor, and the overall story has been done before better. The only two things that are likeable about this movie is there is a romantic comedy feature to the movie that for some reason works. Whether it was the stereotypical angry jealous Latina bit they were running or the odd couple love story between Pete and Keke, it worked. We gave in to our more stereotypical instincts and giggled; and we loved the strange bedfellows that worked between Pete and Keke. Outside of those things the movie was watchable but forgettable.

The cast is trying, but we don’t give out participation awards around these parts. Eddie tries to give us his typical energy at times but really that magic has been lost; and we’d look forward to him re-inventing himself one more time for the latter part of his career. Pete tames back his regular schtick and it … works? He wasn’t annoying or too much and so we say kudos to you, sir. Keke does her regular schmegular but for a comedy movie the legit acting moments worked better than the comedy moments. Luckily for her, this movie was not predicated on her comedic powers. Everyone else was fine, but there’s nothing to write home about here.

Long story short, The Pickup didn’t need to be picked up. The movie is fine, the acting is fine, the story is fine but don’t we deserve a bit more than just fine. The saving grace to this movie is that it came out to streaming and not at the theater. Oh, the masses would be upset if this came out in the theater. Grab a handful of popcorn and watch this on Prime if you have nothing else to do.
