What’s up, Streamers! It’s a pretty slow weekend at the box office, so it is time to catch up on what’s still in theaters that maybe you missed. In a season supersaturated with sequels and reboots, Freakier Friday is a recent release that understood the assignment. In this sequel to Freaky Friday (2003), Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan return as mother and daughter, Tess and Anna Coleman, who have the inexplicable connection of having walked a day in each other’s shoes. Now, Anna is a single mother to Harper (Julia Butters) and she’s about to get married to a single father, Eric (Manny Jacinto), whose daughter is a rival of Harper’s, Lily (Sophia Hammons). The daughters desperately do not want their parents to get married, and through magical circumstances, Harper and Lily switch bodies with Anna and Tess. You know how the rest goes as body-swapping hijinks ensue.
The main question about Freakier Friday is whether this movie needs to exist. While my answer is no, I understand why it does. Here’s the thing. The plot of this sequel is basically the same as the original. There really isn’t any clever twist or inventive wrinkle in the plot. The only thing that is different is that 4 people are switching bodies. Moreover, you know exactly how this movie is going to end before the opening credits roll. Thus, this movie must rely on the details that bring it together. Luckily, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are talented comedic actors who have great chemistry. It’s particularly fun to see Lindsay Lohan as an adult on screen. She’s charming and her performance has a freedom and comedic timing clearly cultivated in a Disney factory. The movie also adds callbacks and cameos from the original that will draw in the fans. I didn’t really care about that. Nevertheless, it is just a delightful time for the family at the movies even though there no real reason for this movie to exist.

Ultimately, Freakier Friday is a cute movie with broad, Disneyfied comedic moments. While the plot is basically the same as Freaky Friday (2003) and every other body swapping movie, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis have such great chemistry that they show why this sequel is worthwhile. Fans of the original will probably get joy from the boost of nostalgia while everyone else can just enjoy this fun family movie. If you love the original, grab a big box of popcorn; but, if this is your first go round with Lohan and Curtis, you can wait for this to show up on Disney+ with a handful of popcorn.
