What’s up, Streamers! It’s the early days of the summer movie season, which mean sequels galore. This weekend’s new release is a sequel 20 years in the making. Yes, The Devil Wears Prada 2 struts into theaters with its new Chanel boots and the majority of the original’s cast in tow. In this highly anticipated sequel, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), after being sacked from her respectable newspaper job, returns to Runway as the newly hired features editor. While she’s there to bring journalistic integrity to the magazine, Andy must again navigate her old boss, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), who is still the icy Editor-in-chief of Runway. Along the way, old faces resurface in their new roles as the magazine struggles to remain relevant in the face of the changing media landscape. Cerulean sweaters and cameos galore hijinks ensue.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has the same spunky energy, wit and charm of the original movie that came out 20 years ago while attempting to address how print media and society has changed over that period. Since the core characters have returned, the movie is able to rely on nostalgia as it addresses these new themes. However, the plot feels overstuffed, unfocused and a little convoluted initially; it takes a while for the storyline to come together which makes the movie feel too long. Nevertheless, the movie does have plenty of memorable and funny moments. It may not be as quotable as the original, but whenever Emily (Emily Blunt) shows up, you know she’s going to have a one-liner worth a few LOLs. On the other hand, I felt like Miranda was a bit stuck and not as formidable as she was. Miranda lacks the intelligence she seemed to have, though she still had some good quips. Anyway, she’s still stylish and fierce, it never rises above the level of been-there-done-that. Anne Hathaway slips easily back into Andy’s frantic skin, but now she brims with a little more confidence than she had 20 years ago. Stanley Tucci is a bright spot as well. The fans of the original should be satisfied.

Ultimately, The Devil Wears Prada 2 brings your favorite characters from the original into the 2020s with great fashion moments, good music, and commentary on today’s media. While the plot feels unfocused and too long at times, the movie still had funny lines and is entertaining overall. It’s easy to like and enjoyable to watch, so grab a bowl of popcorn, your pageboy hat, and sashay to a matinee.
