Hey, Streamers! Have you ever been invited to your neighbor’s home for a casual evening and it turns into something unexpected? That sort of thing seems to only happen in the movies, doesn’t it? Well, The Invite takes that premise and populates it with off-kilter characters and witty banter. In this movie, Angela (Olivia Wilde) has invited her neighbors, Pina (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), for dinner unbeknownst to her husband, Joe (Rogen). Angela and Joe bicker constantly about everything as Angela desperately wants to seem cool to Pina and Hawk while Joe has no qualms about antagonizing the couple. As they do, things escalate when the conversation get more risqué. Sexy and farcical hijinks ensue.

The Invite has a lot of elements that make it an enjoyable movie-going experience. While the premise is familiar, the screenplay by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack is witty and insightful. There are cutting lines and very funny moments sprinkled throughout. It can also be surprisingly tender at times. In addition, these characters are quick-witted and engaging; and the cast of skilled actors brings it all together. Each actor shines in their own unique way. I think Olivia Wilde is particularly good at depicting Angela’s desperation. Penelope Cruz is a magnetic presence in this movie. She quite funny and is the glue that binds this ensemble.

Beyond all of that, this is a well-constructed movie. The design of Angela and Joe’s apartment is really interesting. It feels lived in and tactical and reflects this couple that’s at odds with each other. Moreover, the apartment is claustrophobic which only heightens the humor in this tense situation. This movie’s score is also a highlight. I’ve never noticed a musical score in a movie like this more than when Angela and Joe are going back and forth.

Ultimately, The Invite is a funny and entertaining movie that relies on a strong cast to give specificity and life to a familiar premise. A great screenplay and production design enhance the humor and tension throughout. It’s a fast-paced movie that will surprise with its humor, twists and emotion. Grab a big box of popcorn and your favorite sparring partner for a date night at the movies.
