Happy Halloween movie season, Streamers! The promise of scary movies abounds in this season, and this weekend sees the release of a creepy one, Other Mommy. If you aren’t aware, check out the trailer below. As you’ll see, this movie follows a little girl, Bela, whose mom has a doppelganger aka “other mommy” who is some type of entity threatening the family going through marital issues. Who is the good mommy and why is other mommy acting like this? Horror hijinks ensue.
I’ll get down to the nitty gritty. The commercials and trailer make this movie seem way better than it turned out to be. Quite disappointing! I’ll say they don’t give away all the moments in the trailer; however, the things they don’t give away don’t make the movie much better. In fact, as a couple moviegoers shouted out, “that was whack!” This movie definitely has a chilling vibe to it for the first 70% of the movie, but it loses it towards the end. The filmmakers do a pretty good job keeping the viewer guessing but the payoff leaves much to be desired.
As far as the cast goes, there’s not much to write home about. Jessica Chastain is creepy. That’s basically what I’ve decided from this movie and pretty much there’s no coming back for her from this. Kiss your leading lady roles goodbye. The young starlet of the movie tries to act but that’s about it. And, if I hear the word “Daddo” ever again, I’ll evil side eye whoever that is so hard.
If I try to find a positive, there’s a clear mommy horror or kid-parent/ divorce trauma thing going on, that is kind of relatable. But the story got explained so whackly, it almost ruined the movie that was already going poorly. Someone legitimately walked out of my theater saying this is whack! Now, I can see this movie resonating more with the mommy groups of the world, but I find it hard to believe even they will find the movie compelling.

Long story short, Other Mommy is a lackluster horror movie that is outshined by it’s fear inducing trailer. Jessica Chastain is pretty good as a creepster but that’s about all I have to say about that (*Forrest Gump voice*). It’s Halloween season and if it’s free and you’re a mom, check it out… otherwise grab a couple popped kernels of popcorn to watch this movie.
